- Schools
In Summer 2019, Music to the Ears and Academix welcomed Girls Make Beats to the BEAT Lab in Downtown Los Angeles for a week-long Summer Music Camp introducing girls to the fundamentals of DJing and music production.
The opportunity
Girls remain underrepresented across music production, DJing, audio engineering, and other technical roles within the music industry. Creating early access to professional tools, instruction, mentors, and supportive learning environments can help young women see themselves not only participating in the industry, but shaping its future.
The Music to the Ears approach
- Partner with Girls Make Beats to expand access to music technology and education
- Provide a creative learning environment equipped for hands-on exploration
- Introduce students to DJing, music production, and audio engineering
- Connect girls with women already building careers and leadership in the music industry
The experience
Led by Girls Make Beats founder Tiffany Miranda, students (ages 8-16) participated in a week-long summer camp, learning the fundamentals of DJing and music production through hands-on instruction, collaboration, and creative exploration.
The impact
- Girls gained hands-on experience with DJing, music production, and creative technology
- Students learned in a supportive environment designed to encourage collaboration and confidence
- Female leadership and representation was at the focus of the learning experience
- The collaboration amplified Girls Make Beats' mission of expanding the female presence in music production, DJing, and audio engineering
- A shared partnership demonstrated how creative spaces and community organizations can work together to expand access and representation
