The opportunity

Major cultural investments can do more than transform public spaces. They can create opportunities for young people to experience, participate in, and contribute to the culture of their own communities. Destination Crenshaw created a natural setting to connect music, creativity, education, and cultural identity.

The Music to the Ears approach

• Create an interactive music education experience within a community cultural event
• Introduce young people and families to the art and culture of DJing
• Provide hands-on access to professional creative equipment and technology
• Connect creative learning with the music, history, and cultural legacy of the community

The experience

Music to the Ears and Academix created a 10 x 20-foot interactive music education activation where students and families could explore the Art of DJ Culture through hands-on creative experiences. The activation was part of the Destination Crenshaw groundbreaking celebration, hosted by Issa Rae and featuring musical performances, community leaders, and City officials.

The impact
